Modern Literature

"Lock and Key" by Sarah Dessen

---The main character of this book is Ruby. She has an older sister Cora, and the two of them grew up with a mother that was addicted to drugs and took the "family" all over the place. Cora took her entire life of failure and turned it into an extremely successful one. She has a really good job, an amazing husband, and lives in a wonderful home and community. This life is all that most people could ever dream of having, and she had it. Cora knew from the life that she grew up having that she wanted to make her own better. It was a lot of work, but she is proof that it is possible. It is possible to come out of situations that seem as though they are at the very bottom of the bottom.

"Vanishing Acts" by Jodi Picoult

---In this book, the father kidnaps his little girl. She knows nothing of this or her previous life until she, herself is about to get marriedm and already has a daughter of her own. She finds out when the father is being taken by the police. But why did he do this? He did it because the mother was an alcoholic and he thought that the only way for his daughter to have a normal life would be to take her away. When the mother and daughter are finally reunited after 28 years, the mother admits to the drinking but says that she has been sober for 20 years. She knew that she had really screwed up, and that the only chance she had to possibly get her back would be to sober up. She learned from her alcoholic ways and set her life back on track.
